MuseumApp-workshop in Amsterdam Historical Museum

Waag Society and 7scenes organized a lunchworkshop, in cooperation with the Amsterdam Historical Museum (AHM) during the 7th edition of ‘Kom Je Ook?’ organized by Mediamatic.  The attractive slogan ‘Play outside with mobile media’, drew a large crowd to the Brakke Grond, cultural centre in Amsterdam.
The workshop was all about the MuseumApp and the needs for mobile media in the cultural heritage sector. MuseumApp offers museum visitors the possibility to enjoy collections outside the museum walls. By offering information on site, a larger audience can be reached and the museum becomes more visible. MuseumApp comes from a unique cooperation between curators, documentalists, exhibitionmakers and designers from the AHM and Waag Society. During a series of creative labs, a pilot tour was produced in 7scenes that made the perception of the museum collection by the visitor more personal, interactive and more exciting!
Around 20 professionals such as developers and content creators, representatives from the Stedelijk and Amsterdam Historical museum attended the workshop consisting of short outlines of MuseumApp and a in depth presentation of the 7scenes platform. Q & A led to lively discussions about content, copyrights, quality control and technical (im-) possibilities of GPS technology and availability of smart phones. Besides that many practical issues were addressed such as ways to lend equipment to an audience.
Who can use MuseumApp? In the first place it will be made available for the entire cultural heritage sector in The Netherlands. Accessibility and affordability are keywords in the roll out. Time will tell how it will all grow.
It became clear that the quality of the content is the responsibility of the participating institution because of the name attached to the project.
